Thanks for reading The Nonlinear Life, a newsletter about navigating life's ups and downs. Every Monday we talk about Words4Life—popular sayings, mottos, buzzwords, table topics. Also, dad jokes! Every Thursday we focus on life transitions, how to turn this period of uncertainty and stress into one of growth and renewal.
I spent the first hour of Christmas Eve wandering entirely by myself in the spectacular Uffizi Galleries in Florence. Gallery after gallery had one thing in common: Images of the birth of Jesus, baby Jesus, and welcoming to Jesus to the world. They were on wood and canvas; round and rectangular; muted and gilded. Without thinking, I started snapping photos. And then I realized the timing. All these centuries later, his weekend marks the anniversary of when that birth is celebrated. The coincidence filled me with awe—and joy.
So, with apologies for the uneven photos (and the lack of attribution), here are 11 images of the birth of Jesus. And Merry Christmas—to all who celebrate, and all who don't. We all need a little warmth, beauty, and joy in our lives this year.
